Workflow portal modernization

A regional electronics company runs its leave, overtime, part-number, stock-transfer and sponsorship requests through an internal approval portal. The original was built on ASP.NET MVC with jQuery and LDAP sign-in, and had no automated tests. We are replacing it piece by piece with a .NET 10 API, a separate gRPC workflow service and a React frontend, while the old system keeps running.

• Moved about 35 live approval workflows to the new system without changing the legacy databases, so we can roll back at any point.
• Replaced LDAP sign-in with Microsoft Entra ID.
• Deployed to AWS ECS Fargate using Terraform and Azure Pipelines, with unit, functional and architecture tests.

Textile and garment ERP rebuild

A manufacturing ERP covering merchandising, knitting, dyeing, cutting, inventory, export, payroll and accounting, originally written in ASP.NET MVC 5, AngularJS and Kendo UI. I designed the new .NET 10 and Angular version and led the migration.

• Split the system into 15 modules, with build checks that stop one module from referencing another. Any of them can be moved into its own service later.
• Put a YARP gateway in front, so the frontend never needs to know where a module is hosted.
• Wrote two report renderers that reuse the existing RDLC and Crystal Reports layouts. The first 29 reports came across without being redrawn.

Oracle to PostgreSQL migration

Moved the same ERP's database from Oracle 11g to PostgreSQL 18: 1,181 tables, 77 million rows and about 363,000 lines of PL/SQL. The whole migration is scripted, so it can be run again from scratch.

• Tested it by running the same procedures on both databases and comparing the results. Regressions went from 34 to 5.
• Found 1,425 money and quantity columns that had been converted to floating point, which would have caused rounding errors.
• Got one slow procedure from over three minutes down to under a third of a second.

Umerang, a customer data platform

Built for businesses that want to keep their own analytics data rather than send it to Google Analytics. It accepts events in any JSON shape, processes them through RabbitMQ, and has a query API for filtering large data sets. I designed the architecture and led development.

Clubeez, club management and marketing

Lets clubs run memberships and marketing in one place: Google and Apple Wallet passes, vouchers, email campaigns, newsletters, automated workflows, and a form builder for collecting data from other systems. I designed it as a set of services that talk to each other through RabbitMQ.

Chamera, school photography

A platform for school photographers, hosted on AWS. It uses image recognition to sort and process photos, stores media in S3 behind a CDN, and issues Google and Apple Wallet passes.

• Lead the team rebuilding a client's workflow portal on .NET 10, gRPC and React, hosted on AWS.
• Tracked down and fixed data loss in a warehouse scanning app, and reviewed older intranet apps before moving them off Active Directory.
• Introduced a working method for AI coding tools: a written migration plan, architecture tests, and a review at the end of every phase.

• Technical lead and architect on Umerang, Clubeez, Chamera and the e-commerce plugins, built with .NET Core, RabbitMQ and Kubernetes.
• Kept the AWS systems (S3, Cognito, Lambda) at 99.9% uptime.
• Wrote the team's architecture standards and coding guidelines and ran design reviews. Technical debt fell by about 40%.
• Mentored engineers and looked after staging and production deployments on Docker and Kubernetes.
